What Is Diwali? Teaching Kids About the Festival of Lights

ree

Every year, millions of people around the world celebrate Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights. It’s one of the biggest and brightest festivals in India filled with candles, colorful decorations, sweets, and joy!

Diwali celebrates the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. Families decorate their homes with glowing lamps called diyas, make beautiful rangoli designs, and share gifts and sweets with loved ones. It’s a time of togetherness, kindness, and renewal.

🌟 Why Kids Should Learn About Diwali

Teaching children about Diwali helps them understand that the world is full of beautiful cultures, stories, and traditions. Whether you teach in an ESL, Montessori, or early learning classroom, introducing holidays like Diwali:

  • Encourages cultural awareness and respect for diversity.

  • Promotes creativity through art, crafts, and storytelling.

  • Builds empathy as students learn about celebrations different from their own.

  • Improves communication and social skills as they share and discuss traditions.

When children see how others celebrate around the world, they learn that our differences are something to appreciate and celebrate, not fear or ignore.
